What I’m Reading — July 2017

Every month I share what books I finished last month and what I’m reading now. I also love to hear what others are reading. Share your own book recommendations in the comments or friend me on Goodreads!

What I'm Reading--July 2017

I managed to read four books in June, which is not too bad.

Finished in June

  • Not in God’s Name: Confronting Religious Violence by Jonathan Sacks. This was the final book of the season for my church book club. Sacks is a great writer, and I loved his perspective on the Genesis stories of Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph. There were some great insights in this book, but, ultimately, the book was not as successful with the “confronting religious violence” part.
  • The Dinner Party and Other Stories by Joshua Ferris. Ferris’ first novel, Then We Came to the End, is one of my favorite books of the past 12 years. It’s so darkly, hysterically funny. But, the sad, desperate characters in this collection of short stories were mostly just…sad. Although there were a couple bright spots, and Ferris is a great writer, I didn’t care for the book overall.
  • Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls, and Everything in Between by Lauren Graham. Okay, I don’t read many celebrity memoirs, but I made an exception for this book by actress Lauren Graham. And, it was a delightful, breezy read.
  • Someday, Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham. It wasn’t until I read her memoir that I knew that Graham had also published a novel. Did my public library have a copy? Yes, they did! Again, not the kind of book I’d usually read, but I was charmed by the story of Franny Banks, a twenty-something living in New York City and struggling with her acting career. It was cute and sweet — an appropriate fluffy summer read.

Reading Now

I am sadly between books at the moment, although I have a backlog of World of Interiors magazines that I am slowly working through. I’m so far behind that I should probably cancel my subscription, but I love this magazine so much that I can’t bring myself to cancel, so I am committing myself to catching up to the current issue. Only six more issues to go! Sigh.

Hey, I’ve been doing these monthly book posts for over a year now. Here’s what I read last June.

So, what are you reading this summer?

  1. I’ve sent you the friend request :) but you’ll find that mostly, sadly, mine are brainless reads right now. All my thought is going into work & family.
