WIP Weds: All Shall Be Well, Part 1,000

Backstitching is happening here on the “All Shall Be Well” cross-stitch quotation.

WIP Wednesday logo

Once upon a time, I didn’t like to do backstitching. I thought it was tedious and boring. But, it makes such a difference in a project.

Here is a close-up of some of the lettering in the “All Shall Be Well” project with the backstitches completed:

Close-up the effect is subtle. The letters are more defined, but maybe it doesn’t seem like a huge difference.

But, I think the difference is more striking from a distance. Here is the full piece with the partially finished backstitching:

The finished letters pop off the fabric from a distance.

I have gotten to the point in the project where I have started bargaining with myself in the evenings while stitching — “Just one more letter before I have to get ready for bed…No, I can finish this word–then I can brush my teeth…” Ha! I can’t wait to finish this now.

Pinch Purse Summer Challenge Project

Every summer my embroidery guild group comes up with a challenge project for members to complete, if they wish. Last year the challenge project was to complete a patriotic-themed piece, and I stitched the “Liberty Stars” counted canvaswork project.

This summer the challenge project is to sew a little pinch purse. The pinch purse is a three-sided coin pouch that you squeeze to open. we were provided with instructions and a template and piece of plastic for the side pieces. This probably only makes sense if you have made one of these yourself.

I have to admit I am finding the instructions difficult. I did a search online and found two thorough tutorials for making these things:

I am still confused about aspects of the assembly process, but for now I am forging ahead and hoping that the steps will become clear as I get to each part. I hope I figure it out because the purses look cute when they are finished.

But, you may be asking, what does sewing a pinch purse have to do with embroidery? Ah ha! Not only are we sewing the pinch purse, but the challenge also requires that we embellish the fabric using any embroidery technique.

I have decided to try a little ribbon embroidery for the project. I have never done ribbon embroidery, but I love the way it looks, so I’d like to give it a go. The pinch purse is small, so it is the perfect size to try a little motif using ribbon.

So, here’s how far I’ve gotten. Using the template we were provided, I cut out six shapes from the plastic we were given.

I *think* I cut out the right sizes and the right number of shapes, but I’m not sure. This was one of the things I was confused about. I guess I’ll find out!

I also looked around online for silk ribbon appropriate for embroidery and ended up placing an order with Nordic Needle. I was anxious about trying to pick ribbon colors just by viewing thumbnail images on my computer screen, but I’m happy to report that my color palette turned out pretty well. Nordic Needle shipped my items very quickly, and I received the ribbons and the set of chenille needles I ordered today.

I have about a month and a half to complete this project, so expect updates over the next few weeks!

Thanks for reading!

WIP Weds: Backstitching Begins on All Shall Be Well

I am still stitching my “All Shall Be Well” cross-stitch project. But, I have made some progress since my last update a couple weeks ago.

WIP Wednesday logo

I have completed all of the full and fractional stitches in the pattern. Now all I have left is backstitching. Here is what the piece looks like now:

I thought about stitching the backstitching in the decorative corner in the lower right first and then doing the lettering. But, I decided to start at the top and work my way through all of the lettering, and then finish with the decorative corner.

It is somewhat difficult to tell in this photo, but I have added the backstitching around the first two “l” letters and the first “s.” Hope to have more progress to show soon!

Weekend Links — 07/15/17

I was away this week on a vacation in Northern Wisconsin where I had no Internet or phone access. It was lovely. But, now I am back in the world and catching up. I will have updates on my needlework projects as soon as I can take some photos and get myself organized again.

But, in the meantime, it’s time for my weekly round-up of needlework, textile, books and art links from my wanderings around the web.

Here are this week’s links:

Video of the Week

This video of 65,000 fans waiting for a concert to start in London and spontaneously singing along to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” restored my faith in humanity a bit this week. More than 25 years after the death of Freddie Mercury, Queen can rock a crowd without even being there.

WIP Weds — ‘All Shall Be Well’ Progress Report

I have a happy update on my Julian of Norwich “All Shall Be Well” cross-stitch project for this week’s stitchy update.

WIP Wednesday logo

I’ve been stitching up a storm at home this past week. I hate to say it, but I kind of have Netflix to thank for that. I’ve become mildly addicted to the TV show Gotham. I don’t watch TV normally, so this show was new to me, and I’ve always had a soft spot for the Batman universe. I’ve been binge-watching season one this past week and stitching my “All Shall Be Well” project.

Here is the first progress photo:

all-shall-be-well-progress3

Only one word missing here. I finally made it to the last page of the pattern. Even though the stitching occurred over many sessions, I did not take as many progress photos as I could have. Mostly, because I was so focused on the stitching, and I didn’t want to have to keep unrolling the fabric. This is what my projects look like while I am stitching:

stitching-all-rolled-up

The non-working areas of the fabric are all rolled up and held together with little clips to keep the excess fabric out of the way while I stitch. But, as you can see, I am much farther along on the piece in this photo than in the first photo.

Here it is all unrolled:

lettering-finished-all-shall-be-well

Yes! I have finished the main stitching of all of the lettering, and now I am working on the decorative corner. I still need to go back and complete the backstitching on all of the lettering, but I can see the finish line up ahead now on this project. Woo hoo!

And, this pattern is available online at Rabbit Girl Crafts on Etsy.

What I’m Reading — July 2017

Every month I share what books I finished last month and what I’m reading now. I also love to hear what others are reading. Share your own book recommendations in the comments or friend me on Goodreads!

What I'm Reading--July 2017

I managed to read four books in June, which is not too bad.

Finished in June

  • Not in God’s Name: Confronting Religious Violence by Jonathan Sacks. This was the final book of the season for my church book club. Sacks is a great writer, and I loved his perspective on the Genesis stories of Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph. There were some great insights in this book, but, ultimately, the book was not as successful with the “confronting religious violence” part.
  • The Dinner Party and Other Stories by Joshua Ferris. Ferris’ first novel, Then We Came to the End, is one of my favorite books of the past 12 years. It’s so darkly, hysterically funny. But, the sad, desperate characters in this collection of short stories were mostly just…sad. Although there were a couple bright spots, and Ferris is a great writer, I didn’t care for the book overall.
  • Talking as Fast as I Can: From Gilmore Girls to Gilmore Girls, and Everything in Between by Lauren Graham. Okay, I don’t read many celebrity memoirs, but I made an exception for this book by actress Lauren Graham. And, it was a delightful, breezy read.
  • Someday, Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham. It wasn’t until I read her memoir that I knew that Graham had also published a novel. Did my public library have a copy? Yes, they did! Again, not the kind of book I’d usually read, but I was charmed by the story of Franny Banks, a twenty-something living in New York City and struggling with her acting career. It was cute and sweet — an appropriate fluffy summer read.

Reading Now

I am sadly between books at the moment, although I have a backlog of World of Interiors magazines that I am slowly working through. I’m so far behind that I should probably cancel my subscription, but I love this magazine so much that I can’t bring myself to cancel, so I am committing myself to catching up to the current issue. Only six more issues to go! Sigh.

Hey, I’ve been doing these monthly book posts for over a year now. Here’s what I read last June.

So, what are you reading this summer?

Weekend Links

I haven’t shared any links in a couple weeks. How time flies! I chalk it up to lazy summer days and too much life-stuff going on. But, I’ve been saving links every day and the backlog is piling up!
