• Early this week, Microsoft announced that the program Microsoft Paint was going away.  The Internet was in an uproar over the death of this beloved app, which has been around since 1985. As a result of the outcry, Microsoft clarified that MS Paint would still be available after the latest Windows update. Long live Paint!
• This is the last weekend to grab freebie cross-stitch charts from designer Lucie Heaton’s massive motif library. After August 1, it will be subscription-only.
• I love to see photos of needlework shops around the world. This week Plum Street Samplers shared some beautiful photos of the Silver Needle shop in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Beth at the “Garden Grumbles and Cross Stitch Fumbles” blog visited Friendship Crossing in Corvallis, Oregon, and did some serious stash enhancement.
• Have you ever used a Bent Weaver’s Needle? A Two-Eye Bodkin? Or a Trolley Needle? The Kreinik blog explains the tools for getting “prettier stitches.”
• These cut paper sculptures inspired by leaves, butterflies, flowers, and other natural wonders are stunning.

• I love finding articles about needlework and other crafts in traditional news outlets. The Detroit News has a nice profile of basket weaver Ethel Gill.
• Here’s another example: The Fenland Citizen in the UK reports that Mia Hanson is recreating the Bayeux Tapestry.
• These knitted moths are pretty spectacular.
• This post on Book Riot about combining book collections when moving in with a significant other made me chuckle. Between my husband and I, we have three different editions of The Lord of the Rings because neither of us wants to give up “our” copies.
• DMC is creating a huge library of free embroidery and cross-stitch patterns.

I was away this week on a vacation in Northern Wisconsin where I had no Internet or phone access. It was lovely. But, now I am back in the world and catching up. I will have updates on my needlework projects as soon as I can take some photos and get myself organized again.

• Craftgossip found a fun, free cross-stitch pattern by Brooke’s Books that is perfect for summer.
• “The Dark Self” is the name of a new textile exhibit by artist Susan Aldworth that includes an installation of over 1,000 embroidered pillow cases contributed by stitchers from all over the UK.
• In another new exhibition, tapestry weaver and printmaker Jacy Wall shares a selection of work spanning 30 years of her artistic practice in “The Continuous Thread” at The Slade Center in the UK.
• This list of eclectic audiobooks is truly eclectic. My Audible wishlist just got a little longer.
• The AV Club picks their favorite books of 2017 so far, and there are some interesting picks on the list.
• I love this fairy tale bookmark and wrap bracelet tutorial. There are hundreds of ways this could be adapted for a quick and unique gift or accessory.

Video of the Week

This video of 65,000 fans waiting for a concert to start in London and spontaneously singing along to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” restored my faith in humanity a bit this week. More than 25 years after the death of Freddie Mercury, Queen can rock a crowd without even being there.

• Create Magazine has an interview with artist Kay Healy, who creates fascinating stuffed fabric installations.
• LeVar Burton has a new literary podcast, and Nerdist calls it “Reading Rainbow for adults.” I may have to add it to my podcast rotation.
• The Craftsy blog has some tips for using up scraps of yarn left over from other projects.
• Love these “sketches of summer” by artist Grant Snider. So sweet and simple.

I haven’t shared any links in a couple weeks. How time flies! I chalk it up to lazy summer days and too much life-stuff going on. But, I’ve been saving links every day and the backlog is piling up!

• Did you know that the Embroiderer’s Guild of America sells rare and out-of-print textile and needlework books on Amazon? I’ve got this bookmarked now. Rumor is that the items go fast.
• Still looking for summer reading? Try this list of 8 summer books to keep you laughing or librarian Nancy Pearl’s recommended page-turners.
• The Crafty blog shared a bunch of free patterns featuring watermelons.  The collection includes a cure embroidery pattern, crocheted drink coasters, and an appliqué design.
• I love these adorable cut-paper collages by illustrator Clover Robin. Sweet and charming.
• Finally, I have to share this because it made me lol this week. This is what being a university librarian feels like sometimes.
