A New Start This Week

After finishing stitching the Liberty Stars counted canvas piece last week, I took a break from stitching for a few days.

Saturday my husband and I went bike riding along the Centennial Trail which runs along a strip of land with the Des Plaines River on one side and the Sanitary and Ship Canal on the other. It was a perfect day for riding — not too hot and very little wind.

Sunday we got sidetracked when our cat, Chi, decided it would be a good idea to eat some yarn I had accidentally left out. She had eaten over 12 inches of yarn before I realized what she was doing and stopped her. This was around 3pm. I called our vet who recommended that we take her to the emergency vet to try to induce vomiting. So, we bundled Chi into her carrier and drove out to Mokena. Chi was not able to throw up the yarn, so they called in another vet who performed an endoscopy on Chi and they were able to get the yarn out her stomach. We were able to pick Chi up around 9pm after the anesthesia wore off and they were confident that she was doing well again.

It was a stressful few hours, but Chi is back to her usual self now and acts as if nothing happened at all. Sigh. Here is Chi last night helping me with my stitching:

No more yarn for you, Chi!

I did manage a new start this week. You can see glimpses of the pattern above. It is from CrossStitcher magazine. I have a digital subscription to the magazine so the pattern pages are printed from my Zinio desktop app.

Here is where I am at now:

Belle and Boo start

This is sort of a “secret” project so I probably won’t be showing many updates on this one until it is completed and given to the recipient.

I will be picking up some other projects, though, so hopefully I will have some new things to share next week.

Findings Post Header Image

Sometime a week will seem to drag on forever, and then, suddenly, it’s Friday again and you think, “Where did the week go?” That’s pretty much how I feel today. But, it time time for another Findings, my weekly round-up of links to art, needlework, books and other news from my wanderings around the Internet. Here are this week’s links:

Liberty Stars Counted Canvas Finished

I can hardly believe what Liberty Stars looked like just one week ago. This counted canvaswork project went much faster than I thought possible. But, I finished Liberty Stars by From Nancy’s Needle yesterday night.

Here it is, not yet taken off the stretcher bars:

Liberty Stars counted canvaswork finished

I’m very happy with how it turned out. It’s a lovely design, and it stitched up very fast.

The finished stitched piece will be put aside for a bit now. I’m not going to run to the framers with it right away.

Other Project Updates

I just bought a frame so I can finish my Alice in Wonderland “I’m Late” piece. The stitched piece has been washed and ironed, so my next priority is finishing it so I can photograph the finished item and prepare to publish the pattern.

Then I will be hard at work on my next design, plus I can start stitching the Belle & Boo pattern I kitted up weeks ago.

So, I hope to have some exciting new things to show next week.

Tutorials for Dyeing Your Own Cross-Stitch Fabric

I have seen so many women on social media sharing photos of dyeing their own evenweave, linen and Aida fabrics for cross-stitch and other embroidery projects. I have seen beautiful results with tea dyeing, ice dyeing and many other methods. Some are going for an antique look. Others are dyeing fabrics in deep purples or bright greens.

I have never tried dyeing my own fabric, but I can’t say I’m not tempted. So, being the librarian that I am, of course I started doing my own research. I’ve collected this mega-list of tutorials for dyeing fabrics, and if I’ve learned anything, it’s that there is no one right way to do it. There is a lot of experimentation, creativity, and adventure involved.

Background Information

Tea and Coffee Dyeing

If you like primitive-style cross-stitch designs, you may want your fabric to have an antique or rustic look, and dyeing fabric with tea and/or coffee is one way to do that. Here are several methods for dyeing with coffee and tea:

Basic Sink or Bucket Dyeing

All you really need to dye is a sink or bucket and your fabric dyes, along with some salt or vinegar. Here are some simple dyeing tutorials:

Ice or Snow Dyeing

These tutorials use ice or snow in combination with fiber reactive dyes to achieve a mottled or tie-dye type look:

  • Learn how to ice dye from the Dharma Trading Co.
  • If you need a reason to look  forward to winter, “Snow Dyeing Tips” by Vikki Walsh is pretty amazing.
  • This video from Hobby Lobby breaks down the ice dyeing method in 2 minutes:

Marble Dyeing with Shaving Cream

You can achieve a marble effect in your fabric by using fabric dyes with shaving cream.

  • Shaving Cream Dyeing” by Dharma Trading Co.
  • The National Quilter’s Circle has a number of great fabric dyeing videos on YouTube. Here is one that covers marbling with shaving cream:
  • The Rit Dye company also has many video tutorials on dyeing processes, including this one about the shaving cream marbling process:

Painting Your Fabric

Instead of dyeing, you can also try painting your fabric, as these tutorials show:

There are so many methods and techniques for achieving different results when dyeing fabric. This is just a selection of some of the most popular techniques for dyeing needlework fabrics.

Have you dyed your own fabric? Feel free to share additional tips, horror stories, or successes!

Little Stars Completed on Liberty Stars

Over the July Fourth weekend, I worked on the Liberty Stars counted canvas project by Nancy’s Needle.

Instead of stitching the small stars one at a time as I did with the inner stars, I got smart and stitched all four of the outer stars in tandem. Because I already had my needle threaded with the appropriate thread, it made sense to go around the square and stitch all four stars together. As a result, the stitching went much faster and I completed all of the little stars in the pattern.

Here is the updated photo:

Now all I have left to do is the border bands between and around the outer stars. There are five border bands and they are all done in the same slanted gobelin stitch. We’ll see how much I get done in the next week.

7 Books Finished in June!

I finished a whopping seven books in June. That’s almost two books a week, which is crazy.

I am continuing my goal to read more books by female authors. Of the six unique authors I read this month, four of them were women.

In June I read one collection of comics, one book of poetry, two mysteries, and three non-fiction books on very different topics. Here is the full breakdown:

Books Read in June 2016

Poorly Drawn Lines: Good Ideas and Amazing Stories by Reza Farazmand

In a word: hilarious. The kind of book I kept passing to my husband to read so he would understand why I was laughing like a manic. The comic about a bear conflicted about accepting a Facebook friend request was worth the price of the book alone.

Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Dr. Carol S. Dweck

Dr. Dweck’s theories about fixed mindsets versus growth mindsets are compelling, but this book did not do the idea justice. I felt like she tried to dumb it down too much in her attempt to write a popular psychology book. In particular, the book left me wanting more specific strategies for developing a growth mindset.

Monk’s Hood by Ellis Peters

I am continuing to read the Chronicles of Brother Cadfael series this summer. Monk’s Hood is book three in the series. We get some of Cadfael’s backstory in this book as he encounters a lost love from his youth while investigating a poisoning.

St. Peter’s Fair by Ellis Peters

This fourth book in the Cadfael series in set during the abbey’s summer fair and involves murder, spies and the continuing civil war between King Stephen and Empress Maud. I love these books so much. They are such a delight to read.

The Art of Asking; or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Let People Help by Amanda Palmer

I knew very little about Amanda Palmer before I read this book. I knew she was a musician, but I had never listened to any of her work. I knew she had given a popular Ted Talk, which I had watched and found somewhat irritating. And, I knew she was married to the writer Neil Gaiman. So, why did I pick this book up? I’m not sure, but I’m glad I did. Amanda Palmer, in a nutshell, manages to sum up what it means to be a woman in America in the early 21st century. She is polarizing in a way that just would not happen if she were a man. She’s strong, she’s independent, she refuses to play by the rules, and, most damning of all, she’s not afraid to speak her mind. This book was honest in a way you rarely see in memoirs. It was almost too raw, too honest. This book will not be for everyone, but I am glad I read it.

On Jupiter Place: New Poems by Nicholas Christopher

Christopher is one of my favorite authors. If forced to pick my desert island books, I would have a hard time choosing between his novel Veronica and A Trip to the Stars. But, he is also a fantastic poet. This small volume of poetry is his first published poetry collection since Crossing the Equator came out in 2004.

The Librarian’s Nitty-Gritty Guide to Content Marketing by Laura Solomon

I don’t spend as much time as I would like doing reading for professional development. I am glad I made an exception for this book. It is a great introduction to content marketing that, although written with the librarian in mind, could be applied to any business or organization.

Sneak Peek at Alice in Wonderland White Rabbit-Inspired Cross-Stitch Design

This week I have a sneak peek to share of the completed Alice in Wonderland White Rabbit-inspired cross-stitch pattern, “I’m Late.” This is the second in a series of cross-stitch patterns inspired by Alice in Wonderland. I do have ideas for additional patterns to add to the series, but I may take a little break from Alice after this to work on some other ideas.

Last week I had made some progress on the model and I was hoping to finish it in time for this week’s WIP Wednesday update. I am happy to report that I have finished it! Here is the completed project, just out of my hoop:

I'm Late: An Alice in Wonderland White Rabbit Inspired Cross-Stitch Pattern

I need to make some minor adjustments to the pattern and correct a couple errors. I did change one color as I was stitching and I might add some additional back-stitching around the fan. By next week I hope to have the pattern completed and published. We’ll see.

Because I did work diligently on “I’m Late,” I did not make much progress on the “Liberty Stars” counted canvaswork project by From Nancy’s Needle. Here is where it currently stands:

liberty-stars-progress

I only completed one additional mini star since last week.

Next week we should see more progress on “Liberty Stars,” a publication release of the “I’m Late” pattern, and maybe even a start on Belle & Boo.
