Friday Finds — 09/22/17

Friday Finds is my weekly round-up of needlework, art, and book news from around the web.

This week simultaneously dragged on forever and went by super fast. How it that possible? My husband and I have been de-stressing by re-watching the Harry Potter movies. Tonight’s film: Prisoner of Azkaban. It has been at least a couple years since we last watched these movies, and somehow they are even better than I remembered.

This vintage commercial cracked me up because my sister and I both had these dolls. I think mine was Mandy and my sister had the Jenny doll. But, this brought back memories.

WIP Weds: Christmas Ornaments Progress

I have been doing some stitching around here even though I did not get a chance to post any cross-stitch updates last week. I’m still working on the “Evergreen” chart by The Prairie Schooler. They are a fun group of ornaments that use a limited color palette and stitch up fast.

A couple of weeks ago I was still working on the dove of peace ornament. I did get that one finished last week. Here it is:

The white does not show up very well in the photos because of the oatmeal color of the fabric. I do wish I had chosen a darker fabric, but…live and learn. It does look a little better in person, but the details do disappear into the fabric.

After finishing the dove, I decided to start on the fox ornament. Here was my start:

fox-ornament-start

Partly I wanted to stitch something with less white. I love the bright, bold red that is used in this pattern.

Because the fox is red all over, he stitched up pretty fast:

Then I started on the details in the fox, including his eyes, ears, and feet, but I ran out of thread with only three stitches left in his second foot!

I tried to make that last little bit of thread stretch, but I just couldn’t make it. I do have more 3371, but I thought it was funny that this was my stopping point.

I expect to have this little guy finished in no time. But, I’m still not sure how I want to finish the ornaments. I don’t know if I want to do a flat finishing or pillow-style. I haven’t done any pillow ornaments in awhile…we’ll see.

What I'm Reading--Sept 2017

Once again, I only finished one book this past month. But, I have a feeling September will be a big month for reading.

Finished in August

Friday Finds — 09/08/17

I can hardly believe that Labor Day was this past Monday. This did not feel like a 4-day work week. I’m ready to crash.

WIP Weds: Prairie Schooler “Evergreen” Ornament 2

I’ve done a little stitching since last week, but not as much as I would like. I am continuing with the Prairie Schooler “Evergreen” chart and stitching the motifs as separate ornaments. I’ve made a start on the second ornament, which is a dove of peace. Progress pics below!

I’m stitching all of the ornaments on an 18 count Aida in a rustic oatmeal color. Unfortunately, once again, I am wishing I had chosen a darker fabric because the white thread does not show up very well against the oatmeal background. But, I am sticking with it because I’ve already cut all of the fabric pieces for the ornaments.

The subtle effect of the white against the off-white background does look kind of nice, too. I think it will work out in the end. The photo below shows where I am currently at with this piece.

This ornament has more details that the Santa ornament did, so there is more changing thread colors for all of these little bits, but I expect I will finish it pretty quickly. By next week, I’d like to have this one done and be on to number three!

WIP Weds: Prairie Schooler Stitching

I needed a break from big stitching projects, so I went through my stash of cross-stitch charts and pulled out the “Evergreen” pattern by The Prairie Schooler. I am stitching the motifs as separate ornaments rather than as one big picture. I started and completed the first Santa in a few days.

Here’s my start:

prairie-schooler-santa-start

I chose an 18 count aida fabric for the ornaments in an oatmeal color. I should have chosen a darker fabric because the white thread does not show up real well.

Here’s Santa after another stitching session:

I love the simple color palette for this chart. It’s a fun, quick stitch.

And, finally, I finished Santa yesterday:

It looks like he is supposed to be holding and/or throwing a snowball. And, I love his shifty, expressive little eyes. I plan to stitch a few more motifs from this chart, and then I will finish them as individual ornaments. I’ll probably so some kind of flat-backed finishing, but we’ll see.

Friday Finds — 08/25/17

Friday Finds is my weekly round-up of needlework, art, and book news from around the web.

We are wrapping up Welcome Days at my school this week as we welcome the class of 2021 to campus, plus all of our returning students. I’m also teaching my first class this semester! I met with my class yesterday, and they are pretty awesome. I’m looking forward to spending the next 14 weeks with them in Introduction to the College Experience.

But, enough about me. Here are this week’s links:

Video of the Week

“One More Pull” by Bounding Main. This a cappella group specializes in traditional sea shanties and other folk tunes. They play on the Renaissance faire circuit. I’ve been lucky to see them live, and their harmonies are pretty great.

WIP Weds: Pinch Purse Completed

Hold on because this is going to be an image-heavy post. I finished my pinch purse this week.

WIP Wednesday logo

After I finished stitching the little ribbon embroidery motifs, I had to cut out the fabric pieces. Then I had to cover the plastic template pieces for the sides with the fabric. You can see those template pieces here. I also added a layer of batting between the fabric and the plastic template for the outer sides. You can see the batting pieces and the fabric I chose for the inner lining here.

So, now I had all of the pieces. I covered the smaller inner lining plastic templates with the pink fabric and the outer templates with the needlework fabric with the ribbon embroidery for the two outer sides. Then I had to handstitch the inner lining pieces to the outer pieces using a ladder stitch. This was the biggest pain-in-the-rear part. My inner template pieces were a little too small. If I do this again, I will make sure the size difference between the inner and outer pieces is not as great. But, I stitched all the pieces together and ended up with this:

pinch-purse-inner-lining

The inner lining pieces have been stitched to the outer sides above. Below is what the outer sides now look like with the ribbon embroidery:

pinch-purse-outer-sides

Once all the sides were stitched together, the final step was to assemble and sew the sides to form the actual pinch purse. I ended up grabbing some leftover DMC #5 perle cotton to use to stitch the final step. (In fact, I think it was leftover from last year’s challenge project — the Liberty Stars counted canvaswork piece I stitched.)

This final step stitched up really quickly. I just used a whip stitch to stitch up the sides of the purse. Suddenly I was done in almost no time at all.

And, here are a couple photos of the finished pinch purse:

Blue roses above and pink roses below:

And, since photos don’t really do it justice, I also made this short little video to demonstrate the pinch purse:

My little pinch purse turned out a tad wonky, but overall I’m very happy with it. I enjoyed the process, and I learned a great deal from the project. And, I would make more of these!
